Koen Sonck BEL-2

About Koen

I have been windsurfing since my 14 and started racing at age 22 after my graduation as an engineer. I won my first Belgian Championship title in Racing (slalom + Formula) in 2002 and could repeat that 9 more times until 2010 in slalom, formula or the combined discipline. In 2007 managed a gold medal on the Kona worlds, heavy weight division in La Ciotat (France). I have been also a speed addict with multiple podium places during the Belgium Speed nationals and Belgian Speedweek in Gruissan. I have been holding for multiple years some GPS speed records. In 2011 I moved for work to China and lived there until 2015. In Asia I picked up Kite surfing. I made a comeback to the Belgian racing scene in 2016 and managed a 2ndplace in the national slalom championship. End 2016, I got a  lumbar back hernia and a knew total knee replacement job done. After 3 months I was back on the water and 1 month later I won the first slalom races counting for the 2017 championship. Summer 2017 I needed to get a redo on the back surgery, but was up surfing again after 3 weeks. I needed to do a little bit more calm on the remaining slalom races, but still managed a 2nd place in the overall year ranking, ending on a tie with 1st but having worse discards.

My best memory in windsurfing is from the Defi Wind, 2010 edition (1000 participants) where I managed several starts within the top ten and finished in my best race on a 16th place ending overall on a 32th place. This was my first year on Loft sails and I loved the way they were constructed and the way they propelled me on the water.

Why ride Loftsails gear?

Being an engineer myself and an automotive quality manager, I am always looking for the best. I love the way how Monty is thinking about sail dynamics and how he is putting this in practice on his sail designs.
