The Loft | Yann Terrien interview with images

Quick profile: Yann Terrien, French, 12th October 1979. Living in Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria... Windsurfer, Freelance Webmaster.

“When we conquer without danger our triumph is without glory.” Corneille, Le Cid.

Q- How long have you been windsurfing? Where did you begin?
I think my first windsurfing experience was in the lagoon of La Reunion Island: we were living there when I was a kid (from 10 to 14 years old)... But I was more into bodyboarding at the time... I really started windsurfing when we came back to France. My parents have a house in a small town next to Tharon plage (Loire Atlantique – west coast), so with my younger brother we were spending all our school holidays there, waiting for the wind...

Q- Where in this world have you been windsurfing? Which is your favourite place to windsurf? Why?
France, Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote), Maui, Western Australia... And of course Tarifa!
My favourite place to windsurf is Western Australia (Margaret River, Lancelin and Gnaraloo): really nice waves, not so crowded, and the aussie Lifestyle! I've been living there for 6 months and it was a fantastic experience.
In Europe my favourite place is Gran Canaria (where I live now): wind all year round (pretty insane in summer), good surf breaks (occasionally for windsurfing as well), good climate and good people.

Q- Who has influenced your style in the waves?
In waveriding i'd say Josh Angulo and Levi Siver. For the jumping: Angulo's one-handed backloops at Hookipa – it's a classic -, and Jonas Ceballos in Pozo. I also have to mention Regis Bouron for his stylized big late frontloops in Pozo.

Q- What are your objectives for your waveriding?
Is there a move that you are working on?

Pushing the limits and trying to make everything looks smooth and easy. There's always something new to learn or improve, that’s the beauty of this sport!

Q- What about your music?  How long have you played the guitar?  Which artist influences you playing style?
Music is my "escapatory" when there's no wind... I've been playing the guitar pretty much forever (i started with the classical guitar when i was a kid), and i always need to have a guitar with me, even when i'm on a windsurfing trip; it's part of my life.
My playing style? well, i was a teenager in the 90's, so my style was mainly influenced by the 90's rock bands like Metallica, Guns n' roses... Then it goes to Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, Smashing Pumpkins, and much more...

Q-  PLease list your sponsors and your website address, thanks.
