11.08 | Karpathos - travel report by Sebastian Groitzsch

Karpathos ? Where is Karpathos ?

Coordinates: 35° 35' 7" N 27° 7' 43" E.
This Island is called the windiest island of the Mediterranean Sea!
Karpathos is a Greek island and it is on half distance between Rhodos and Crete. It is with 330 square kilometres the second largest island of the Dodekanes and has approx. 5,400 locals. The island is spoiled in the summer by the Meltemi and offers strong wind conditions in the months between April and October. The surfmekka is mentioned Afiartis and is located in the southern part of the island. The Meltemi is extremely strong.

The local thermionics partly get up to 7-9 Bft. I stayed here for three weeks for training some freestyle. I mostly used sails between 3,9 and 4,3. The conditions of each spots are different, so everybody find the spot he likes.

On Karpathos there are 4 opened Spots.

  1. Devil' s Bay: Constant strong wind in this district. In bank proximity the water is beautifully flat, here the Speedworldcup takes place at the end of August 2006. In this bay you find the main station of pro center Chris Schill.
  2. Gun Bay: In this bay the wind is also very strong, but there is a beautiful steep wind wave outside with much wind. The Spot is really nice for Freestyle and speed because in front of the bay, the water is  really flat. In the Gun Bay are the main centers of Happy Surf  and the Club Mistral with the bar "Anemos".
  3. Lagoon: In the lagoon the wind is sometimes a little bit gusty, but however more weakly. But the large standing range of 50m makes the S spot for beginners really safe. For the freestyle it's one of the most favourite place. Because the water is flat, the colors are Caribbean green. In the high season there are bit more people than usually, but morning or in the evening the water is not that much crowded . In the lagoon are all centers with a station represented.
  4. (Punta) Luvspot: The luvspot is on the west side of the island and offers Side to sideoffshore conditions with wind from the right. If it is longer windy, you get some waves on a reefbreak, which is interesting for experts. The luvspot is announced if in Afiartis the wind is simply too strong, because he blows here usually with 1 Bft. less. If the wind becomes however too strong, with 8 Bft., also at the luvspot the water is flat again! Even if the wind comes from the eastside, the wave are breaking early and the water is then only choppy.

Pigadia (the main town) offers numerous possibilities for dinner, shopping and party animals. Surfers meet in Nik´s Internetcafé "Galileo", where everybody should test Nik´s "Hot Tequila". Discos are Enigma, Amnesia, Fever and Must. A taxi ride to Pigadia costs about 14euro. Mopeds can be rented starting at 15euro a day, cars starting at 30euro. So you can also make a small tour around the island if you are sick of windsurfing.
