The marketing departments of most sail making firms are into the idea of many sail lines... they are convinced that with more lines, more sails would be sold.

They discounted the risk of making their products specialized, and possibly unnecessarily expensive.

Many sail brands offer up to 8 lines or more, each line being designed for very specific windsurfing purposes.

Specialized designs risk the perception, if not the reality of all-round performance & range.

Advances in design are from performance and range expansion, not specialization.
