on monofilm construction... Monofilm and Xplys are ideal as a sail materials as they have very limited stretch and no water absorption. The downside (aside from UV sensitivity) is that stitching and monofilm/Xplys do not go well together unless close attention is paid to construction details. Sewing perforates monofilm/Xplys, so dacron scrim adhesive tapes must be placed where there is stitching otherwise sail integrity is compromised. Some of the most expensive sail brands on the market are building monofilm sails without scrim tapes under all stitching... this lack of attention is hidden by placing patches &/or reinforcements on both sides of the sail and omitting the scrim seam reinforcement tapes. Such dubious constructions can also be found on tack patches and foot 2plys from many leading brands. The Loft takes the time and expense to apply scrim tapes and patches under all seams, patches, and stitching. We build with integrity, adding real value to our designs. |
