The Loft | Interview with Rossi… inside Tricktionary2

Monty- Your new book Tricktionary 2 is an impressive work!
Rossi- Thanks!! Happy that you like it!  There are a lot of Loftsails in (and on)
it... I hope it turned out like you thought it should!

Monty- Where did you go to make the photos? Why?
Rossi- We needed a high photo tower to get the perfect angle for all the
photosequences to see every movement perfectly. From the first Tricktionary,
we understood that this is very important to be able to illustrate the maneuvers.
So, we went to Dahab in Egypt- where we worked earlier for the first Tricktionary.  Wind Magazine (UK) lent to us their photo tower. We placed it on the so-called "Speedy" in Dahab.  The water was approximately 2m deep, so we raised the top-platform by one meter. We were approximately 3-4m above the water surface... higher than ever before!!
We stayed there for four weeks, Sandra Schennach taking photos and Matthias Lindner filming every day when it was windy… that was the photoshoot for windsurfing beginners & up to the most extreme freestylers.  We were visited by alot of guest riders; friends of mine were ripping for our cameras,  we got almost all the sequences there.
The only thing that was missing in the Tricktionary 1 was a proper wave chapter.  Tricktionary 1 included just a small wave-special chapter. TR2 will have ALL moves- set in the worlds premiere wave location- MAUI! :)
The same crew (Sandra, Matthias and I) went to Maui for a month in November 2007. Filming together with John Skye and Victor Fernandez!  John worked his wave knowledge into our wavechapter. His tips and explanations are very insightful, even for me!
Maui was a great shooting and it is just the perfect place to take photos and video. During our month there we had all kinds of conditions… Hookipa waveriding in both small 6 big waves, aerials at Baby Beach… we saw Jaws working, and we even had Kona winds at Lanes- which was unbelievable!

Monty- Which were the most difficult moves to illustrate? Why?
Rossi- Hmm... the most difficult moves for me were the wave-moves, as it is a different world.  To get wave action illustrated properly in sequences is difficult- as they are moving.  Doing flat water maneuver filming is fairly easy. In contrast, for good wave images one must merge both moving waves AND the windsurfing-action into one sequence... not easy!

Monty- How were you able to create T-2 and compete in the EFPT (European Freestyle Pro Tour)? Did the EFPT help your T-2?
Rossi- My Tricktionary1-work (photoshoots and computer work) was done between the EFPT contests and in wintertime.  However, this year I had to skip 2 contests in the EFPT because the book had to be finished.  I am happy with my EFPT results- 5th in Tarifa and 9th in Podersdorf, as I am ahead of some competitors who did all the events this year.
After the TR2 was published, with my 9th place in PWA/EFPT Podersdorf, I had good seeding in the PWA tour, so I decided to do the rest of the events.  With two medium results in the Canaries, and my 9th in Sylt/Germany, I ended up 15th overall in the PWA 08 World Tour.
My EFPT and PWA competitions exposed me to the important tips and tricks necessary for advanced maneuvers. My friends who assisted in the making of the Tricktionaries are also competitors- who push the limits.  We learn from eachother, we improve and expand what is possible.

Monty- Are all possible freestyle moves now created, or are there new moves not yet completed? Which riders are pushing the limits?
Rossi-  There'll be no point when we have no more moves to create.
For years I used to think...what else could there be?  This must be the maximum!.  Yet every year new maneuvers are developed!.  We go towards double moves, radical jumps and new wave-style moves. There are no limits!!...  :)
Riders that are really pushing the limits are the top 5 guys in the PWA tour.  Gollito and Kiri are definitely pushing beyond the limits.  Style becomes smooth- moves never envisioned some years ago are now reality! Our equipment becomes lighter and more efficient, assisting us to push thru limits.
