Advance 5.1 + 430 mast

Postby Silver » Mon Jul 19, 2010 8:01 am

Over the weekend we had 25knotts and i trimmed my 5.1 concept with my 430 mast, but the sail did not feel right.
It felt very "nervous" although trimmed well downhaul and outhaul. I am sure i did something wrong ...

So i just wanted to know when trimming it with 430 mast, should the extension be at "zero" and also how long (in cm) should the mast come out of the top of the sail ?

Thanks
Silver

Hi Silver,
As printed on the sail- the Advance 5.1: Mast- 409 Boom- 186 Recommended mast: 400 +9cm extension.
Rigging on a 430 requires 21cm of vario top extension- when rigged. Set the vario top to +- 19cm, set your mast extension to 0. When downhauled, the vario top webbing will stretch, arriving to +-21cm.
Please note that 430s are compatible with the Advance 5.1, and not recommended. The 430 is stiff for the 5.1, even with correct tensions the rig will feel stiff and unforgiving on a 430 compared to the feeling with a 400.

Would you have a 400 to try with the 5.1?
The upper photo is our Advance 2010 5.1 set on its recommended 400 mast.

I use the Advance 5.8 in light wind wave conditions- it is light and when trimmed soft has excellent low end power. The lower photo is my Advance 5.8 rig after a session in Bolonia last April. The Advance 5.8 sets on a 430 with no extension at the vario top, and no mast extension.
Good winds, Monty
:D
